Hey look, we made it onto Yahoo Finance, what every girl dreams of!

PROBLEM:

Savannah is a city full of history and attractions. As a tourist, it is easy to be unaware of all the city has to offer. The current, traditional ways tourists access information (plaques, signs, or generic tours) can be stagnant, inconvenient, or come at a cost.

SOLUTION:

Live Savannah, a digital community in a traditional city. Using HP’s LinkReader app and image watermarking technology, we created a network of live locations and distributed live material throughout Savannah. When scanned, users are instantly provided with exclusive content about history, SCAD, and nearby attractions.

WAIT, WHAT IS LINKREADER?

LinkReader is a free, mobile app by HP that connects digital experiences with printed material. The printed collateral has an invisible watermark, and when hovered by a smart phone, the app links to a rich, digital experience, such as a website, social media, video, etc. (It's similar to a QR code. But prettier. And cooler.)

LIVE SAVANNAH DOWNTOWN

We built the foundation for Live Savannah with SCAD buildings. SCAD does not have a traditional college campus, rather, the city of Savannah is the campus. The college has been a key player in revitalizing downtown Savannah; since 1989, SCAD has adopted and restored over 60 buildings throughout the city. Currently, out of the college’s 67 buildings, 20 are Live.

SIGNAGE

Outside each of the Live SCAD Buildings, a small plaque offers a brief description of the building's history and what happens inside. Scanning the image brings users to the building’s digital content.

LIVE SAVANNAH CARDS

Live Savannah cards are designed with prospective students and parents in mind, so that the experience could extend beyond a building’s physical location. They offer quick facts about the building’s history and link to the same digital content as the plaques.

MAPS

Available at Visitor Centers and Hotels, the Live Savannah Map shows all 20 Live SCAD buildings. When scanned, users are taken to a digital version of the map for the Live businesses.

LOCAL BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS

To build the digital community, we partnered with 84 hotels, restaurants, shops, boutiques, cafes, and historic sites. Participating businesses are denoted by a Live Savannah Sticker on their door. Each sticker is scannable and links to their website.

THE INITAL SCAN EXPERIENCE

When users scan a plaque or Live Savannah card, they are immediately brought to a video displaying a visual timeline of the building’s history and three coins: Interior, Student Work, and Explore.
Tap or hover over the phone to see the Live Savannah experience.

THE COINS

INTERIOR

Due to security reasons, only SCAD students and staff have access to the college's buildings. The Interior Coin is a virtual walkthrough of the building, showing how the space is currently being used.
Tap or hover over the phone to see the interior of Jen Library.

STUDENT WORK

The Student Work coin allows users to learn about the department housed in the building, and links to featured student work.

EXPLORE

The Explore coin enables tourists to discover all Savannah has to offer. By seeing nearby Restaurants, Shopping, History, and Specialty options, the tourism experience is streamlined.

LINKING PRESERVATION WITH INNOVATION

We presented Live Savannah in a panel at the PastForward 2014 conference, sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. From there, the team took it to the streets to give over 60 preservationists a look at our Live City to inspire them to implement the Live City concept in their hometowns.

STREET DISPLAYS

To get folks scannin', the Spring Team made 6 displays to go along Broughton Street, a very popular stretch for tourists and locals alike. When scanned, users were taken to a video about the initiative and our portal to learn more.
